Entertainment Media DictionaryA-E | F-J | K-O | P-S | T-ZLAN: Local Area Network. LAN refers to a closed networking system within a small area (such as a home, office or a few buildings) in which data can be quickly transmitted and shared.
LCD: Liquid Crystal Display. LCD refers to a type of high-resolution screen used on some computers, digital cameras, watches and cell phone screens.
letterbox: A type of image with a wide-screen aspect ratio, the same as those used in movie theaters. Letterbox version DVDs tend to have a thick black bar above and below the image to represent the image as it was originally filmed for the theater screen. DVDs that aren’t in letterbox format (the traditional DVDs) will cut out part of the right and left sides of an image to make it fit the aspect ratio of standard TVs.
megapixel: A measurement equivalent to one million pixels that refers to the picture quality of an image or an LCD screen. The higher the megapixels, the better the resolution, the more quality the image.
MMS: Multimedia Message Service. MMS is a relatively new technology standard being used to improve the quality of image and audio text transmissions.
mobile video: A system available in some cars that allows traveling passengers to play movies.
monitor: A piece of equipment associated with computers and TVs that displays images.
MP3: Standing for MPEG layer 3, an MP3 is a file format used to store, transmit and replay audio files, namely music tracks.
MP4: Standing for MPEG layer 4, an MP4 is the standard file format set by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) for data storage and transmission. NTSC: National Television Standards Committee. The NTSC is an organization started in 1953 that sets the standards for color and other aspects related to TV and video images. |
